About the Position: 

University Outreach serves prospective and incoming students, and any other interested parties in the information seeking and application process, as it relates to the California State University system and Cal State Fullerton specifically. Our office provides campus tours, informational workshops, new and transfer student orientations and general information. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Outreach, Recruitment and Orientation Counselor (Student Services Professional II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the direction of the Director of Outreach, Recruitment, and Orientation and guidance from the Associate Director, and in alignment with the university’s enrollment goals, the Outreach and Recruitment Counselor for African American Recruitment focuses on outreach, recruitment, and support efforts for African American prospective students while also engaging with a diverse range of student populations. This position provides pre-admission advisement to prospective students, parents, school counselors, and community organizations, emphasizing the unique needs of African American students within a broader inclusive framework.

The counselor represents the university at college fairs, high schools, community colleges, and cultural events. The role involves coordinating with organizations and events such as CSU Super Sunday, Black College Expos, Orange County Black History Parade, and other community initiatives. While prioritizing high schools and community colleges with significant African American populations, the counselor also designs specialized workshops, presentations, and programs to increase awareness of the resources and opportunities available to all students.

This position plays a vital role in supporting yield-focused events, such as Experience CSUF: Become a Titan, Titan Welcome Weekend, and Fall in Love with Cal State Fullerton, ensuring these events are culturally responsive and highlight programs, services, and support systems available for African American students and the broader university community. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with campus departments to strengthen partnerships, analyzing recruitment strategies to meet enrollment goals, and providing leadership in fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all prospective students and their families.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.  

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited college or university. Excellent written communication skills in a customer service environment. Knowledge of issues pertaining to K-12 and community college outreach. Familiarity with CSU admissions requirements and with advising students in a public education setting. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Experience using computer software programs for organizing workshop development, correspondence, and student tracking databases.

License/Certifications

A valid California driver's license. The position requires use of private and reliable source of transportation.
