PURPOSE:
The Office of Inclusive Excellence advances excellence at Cal State Monterey Bay through inclusion and equity. The Office of Inclusive Excellence focuses on promoting a campus environment where all students, faculty and staff feel a sense of belonging, are able to fully engage in campus life, and are able to achieve their academic or professional goals.
Reporting to the President, the Associate Vice President of Inclusive Excellence provides strategic, transformational leadership in building an equity-minded, student-ready, inclusive institution that welcomes and supports diverse students, staff, and faculty, whereby diversity is inclusive of a broad range of identities and their intersections, i.e., gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, veteran status, political affiliation, etc. The position reports to the President, is a member of the President’s Cabinet and co-chairs the President’s Committee on Equity & Inclusion. The position advances an equity, social justice and inclusive excellence mindset in all college-wide initiatives, including strategic planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
In support of the University’s senior leadership, this position provides thought leadership in identifying pedagogical strategies for leveraging our student body as an educational asset and to advance a culture of equity and inclusion; supporting equity and inclusion objectives in faculty and staff hiring and development; and developing student support programs that enhance students’ multicultural competence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Leads inclusive- and equity-related Institutional planning, delivery and assessment efforts in support of the vision, mission, values and strategic priorities of the University; coordinates cross-campus initiatives and promotes a living, learning and working environment where all have equitable opportunities to grow, advance, thrive, succeed, and fully pursue educational and professional goals
- In collaboration with campus leadership, students, staff, and shared governance entities, leads, coordinates and assists with the development of a cohesive, comprehensive and strategic inclusion plan and ensures that initiatives in the plan are prioritized, operationalized, and assessed
- Keeps abreast of current research and trends, and best practices in inclusion and equity, and brings that knowledge to inform policy and program development work. Serves as a central resource and point of coordination and communication for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and programs
- Ensures ongoing attention to student, faculty and staff satisfaction, using benchmarking and periodic qualitative and quantitative methods with respect to campus climate. Prepares periodic and special reports for presentation to senior leadership and the campus. Provides leadership and/or partnership at all levels of the university to promote and evaluate progress and impact of efforts to be an inclusive and welcoming environment.
- Oversees the staff, operations and budget of the Office of Inclusive Excellence in support of the University’s diversity and inclusion agenda
- Collaborates with others to create and deliver co-curricular programming and initiatives designed to enhance and expand recruitment, retention, and graduation of geographically underrepresented and underserved students
- Represents the university on matters related to inclusion and diversity, and at various community, civic, and professional meetings and conferences as required
- Serves as a member of the President’s cabinet. Collaborates with senior leadership, including the Provost, vice presidents, deans and directors
- Communicates and consults on an ongoing basis with the Title IX Coordinator/DHR Administrator to identify systemic problems related to equity, inclusion and campus climate that are surfaced through the CSU Executive Order 1095/1096/1097 complaint process; coordinates efforts to develop responsive interventions, outreach programs, and educational workshops to more proactively redress and ameliorate identified challenges; facilitates conflict resolution/conflict de-escalation and crisis management/crisis intervention processes as appropriate; assists with the identification and development of longer-term strategies to address catalyzing factors for conflict or crisis situations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- In-depth knowledge of theory and current research with regard to student and organizational inclusion, educational equity, social justice, human development, training and change management
- Technical mastery of inclusion and equity issues in a complex organizational setting, including proven experience as an organizational leader and program builder, particularly around initiatives that promote equity, access, inclusion, and dialogue around social justice, senior level recruitment and retention, managing change, identity development, curriculum diversification, training, ability to assess the educational impact of diversity, assessing campus climate issues, policy and legal dynamics of affirmative action, and employment strategies designed to foster workplace and workforce diversity
- Demonstrated experience effectively working and establishing rapport with different populations inclusive of gender, race/ethnicity, religion, country of origin, sexual orientation, class, veteran status, and disability
- Skill at navigating the institution’s political landscape, and responding to politically charged or sensitive situations. The AVP must have finely developed problem and conflict resolution skills and be adept at finding win-win solutions to difficult problems, building consensus and support, and reconciling competing interests
- A track record of collaborative engagement with internal and external stakeholders, including a commitment to working collaboratively with students and colleagues to craft a common vision and direction. Must be able to coach, mentor, and inspire colleagues
- Demonstrated track record of collecting and using data to assess the effectiveness of initiatives and achieve measurable results
- In-depth knowledge of organizational change dynamics, with experience in leading large-scale change projects in a multiple-stakeholder environment
- Sophisticated relational abilities and influencing skills, strong emotional intelligence, and superior communication skills, both verbal and written. The AVP must have a track record of fostering relationships and be comfortable crossing organizational boundaries, adapting language and delivery to different audiences
- An understanding of the culture of higher education, including shared governance, tenure and promotion, multiple and competing goals, the nature of campus politics, and the unique needs of different constituencies
- A results-orientation that focuses on achieving the shared university agenda of inclusion and academic excellence, while being an open-minded active listener, able to offer alternatives and consider diverse opinions and
- Commitment to creating a inclusive university and willingness to challenge and engage with all constituencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate degree in a related discipline (Women's Studies, Ethnic Studies, LGBT Studies, Disability Studies, Counseling, Higher Education, etc.)
Three years of senior experience designing, delivering, evaluating and/or leading activities, programs and services related to institutional access, diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism, and/or social justice in a higher education setting.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
- Possession of a terminal degree in a related discipline (Women's Studies, Ethnic Studies, LGBT Studies, Disability Studies, Counseling, Higher Education, etc.)
- Accomplished record of teaching a scholarship that could warrant an academic appointment
- 3-5 years’ experience working within university shared governance and collective bargaining environment

- Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
