About the California State University Maritime Academy:
Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.
Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
Major Responsibilities:
- Attends all mandatory trainings and meetings held during summer sea term, including prior to departure (required TIX/SASH trainings, vessel familiarization, safety meetings, etc.). Assists as directed.
- Assist Office of Cadet Leadership and Development with creating PowerPoint slideshows to present at each Port Briefing prior to arrival in port.
- Assists with maintaining an accurate crew list as crew members arrive and depart from the ship.
- Assists with preparing the ship’s Telephone Directory.
- Assists with the preparation of any necessary documents for entry into foreign/domestic ports as needed.
- Assists with the entry of eNOAD (electronic notice of arrival/departure) prior to arrival and departure from each port.
- Upon re-entry to the U.S., assists the Purser and Customs and Immigration officials with the viewing of passports and other documents.
- Participates in emergency drills; working with cadets to take muster during these drills.
- Provides some support for the Captain. May provide support to the faculty and crew, on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the Captain and Purser as needed.
- Except for days in port, publishes The Bear’s Tale which provides information about the weather, classes, meals, and other ship news for Faculty, Staff, and Cadets.
- Assists with creation of Follow the Voyage blog posts – takes photos of shipboard life daily, writes captions/descriptions to be posted on the FTV website.
- Works under the direction of the Captain and direct supervision of the Purser.
- Other duties as assigned by the Captain and Purser.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a current student at CSU Maritime Academy OR 2025 graduate.
- Must have a valid U.S. Passport or obtain one prior to summer sea term.
- Must have required STCW and Security Awareness training completed prior to summer sea term.
- Must have a valid TWIC card or obtain one prior to summer sea term.
Preferred Qualifications:
Junior, Senior, or 2025 graduate preferred.
Hours of Work/Travel: 40+ Hours per week

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, fingerprinting, pre-employment physical and drug testing) is required for employment.
