PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $162,000 per year to $168,000 per year.

About the Position

The College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) comprises 19 academic departments, including the Graduate School of Education (GSE), which consists of three departments: Educational Leadership (EDLD), Educational Psychology (EPSY), and Teacher Education (TED).

The GSE offers multiple credential and master’s degree programs, as well as a Doctorate in Education in Educational Leadership for Social Justice. K–12 credential programs include Multiple Subject, Single Subject, Added Authorization in Reading and Literacy, Preliminary Administrative Services Credential, and Clear Administrative Services Credential. These programs are fully accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). In addition, EPSY’s MS in Counseling Psychology programs are accredited by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for Marriage and Family Therapy Associate licensure.

Responsibilities

Budget and Enrollment 

  • Coordinate all phases of planning, implementation, and evaluation of Graduate School of Education budgets, working with department chairs and budget analyst.
  • Review and approve all budget documents forwarded by staff.
  • Facilitate student outreach, student recruitment and retention activities.
  • Review and approve all enrollment/grade forms forwarded by staff.
  • Approve requests for late course schedule changes.

Faculty Affairs and Staff Supervision 

  • Assist department chairs in their work with faculty, including assisting department chairs in preparing annual workloads as needed.
  • Build and maintain collegial relationships with faculty and staff in the college, including serving as a point of contact for faculty and staff issues, concerns, grievances, and petitions.
  • Monitor the Retention, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) process.
  • Monitor the tenure-track search process.
  • Serve as immediate supervisor of office staff, elevating their voices and ensuring their wellbeing.

Student Affairs 

  • Receive and process formal complaints or appeals submitted by students, after action by the relevant department chair.
  • Establish and maintain a formal process for addressing student grade appeals.
  • Oversee the GSE’s scholarship and grant programs.

Governance 

  • Serve as a member of the CLASS’s Council of Chairs (COC).
  • Lead GSE Council of Chairs monthly meetings and meet regularly with individual GSE department chairs.
  • Advocate for the Graduate School of Education in campus governance, resource allocation, and across the community.
  • Serve as a member of the School of Education Strategic Planning Committee.
  • Coordinate and monitor completion of all required reports for University Committee on Academic Planning and Review (CAPR).
  • Manage and direct elections for University Committees.
  • Oversee and optimize space and facility allocations and usage within the Graduate School (e.g., classrooms, laboratories, office space utilization, equipment) in consultation with departments.

Curriculum 

  • Assist in the development, receipt, and processing of all curricular proposals from the three academic departments in the Graduate School of Education.
  • Oversee catalogue and scheduling.
  • Chair, organize, and support credential accreditation, including California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) reviews (i.e., program/ Unit documentation and communication with CTC and Graduate School of Education community supporters).

Key Accountabilities 

  • Respond to inquiries and concerns from faculty, colleagues, and students regarding college policies and individual student circumstances.
  • Work collaboratively with other offices to encourage, design, and implement programming consistent with college and University goals and objectives.
  • Assist the Dean and chairs with fundraising and outreach efforts, supporting the development strategies and activities via a deep understanding of and commitment to the value and mission of the Graduate School of Education.
  • Other Duties as Assigned by Dean and other officials in the University Office of Academic Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in education or related field.
  • A record of University level teaching, scholarship; and service requisite for appointment as a tenured, full professor in one of the Graduate School of Education’s three academic departments.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as a department chair or comparable position, or as an associate dean in higher education with experience serving as the direct supervisor of staff.
  • Expertise in managing academic budgets and enrollments; experience in leading higher education committees/initiatives.
  • Expertise in the development of higher education curricula; demonstrated success in utilizing data for planning and evaluation of programs and services.
  • ability to communicate and relate effectively to all stakeholders within the College, University, and community.
  • Outstanding proficiency in teamwork, collaboration, flexibility, and organizational problem solving.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to multi-task with attention to detail.
  • Experience in resolving faculty, student, and staff issues. Well-established experience in program assessment and accreditation, including accreditation review organization.
  • Strong experience in establishing and maintaining partnerships with communities, school districts, and agencies.
