(Job # 556347) Early Childhood Master Teacher, CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,878 – $5,817 per month. Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,878 - $4,912 per month. Final salary placement is commensurate with experience, internal equity, and budget considerations. This is a temporary, full-time, benefited, exempt, 11/12 pay plan (work 11 months of the year with pay and benefits over 12 months) position in the Child Development Department. Position Summary:
Under the lead work direction of the Child Development Lab (CDL) Program Leader and the general supervision of the Interim Dean of the College of Professional Studies, this position fulfills the responsibilities as an afternoon head teacher of the preschool that trains practicum students in the Child Development Department.
Key Responsibilities:
Operating the Afternoon Preschool Program as a head teacher – 30%
- Teaching preschool children (2 yrs. 9 months to 5 yrs.) from 12:45 pm- 3:30 pm Monday through Thursday
- Managing daily operations of the program (e.g. arrival & departure, health and safety checks, small group, large group, outdoor play, etc.)
Maintaining records and reports of the preschool – 15%
- Child files (developmental, health, tradition, and culture)
- Developmental profiles for individual children
- Licensing documents (e.g., immunization records, physical report, emergency information, fingerprints, and other personnel information)
- Accreditation documents
- Tuition charts
Supporting child and family support and education – 10%
- Conducting parent-teacher conferences
- Making referrals of children with special needs
- Attending IEP (Individualized Education Program) and transitional meetings
- Communicating with families daily, weekly, or monthly
- Communicating with families via social media and emails
- Sharing child development and local resources
Providing lead direction, mentoring, and training assistant teachers and college students in their work with young children – 30%
- Providing lead direction and supporting students during their practicum in preschool
- Providing instructional guidance during seminars and office hours
- Providing instructional guidance on learning management system (e.g., CANVAS)
- Provide guidance to student workers
Coordinating with the program leader, morning teacher, faculty supervisors, and Child Development department – 5%
- Attending meetings (e.g., administration meeting and team meeting)
- Contributing to quality improvement and problem-solving discussions
- Engaging in thoughtful and critical reflection (e.g., observing, sharing ideas, and planning)
Participating in professional development – 5%
- Maintaining Child Development Teacher Permit
- Maintaining CPR/First Aid certificate
- Participating in online or in-person professional development activities (local, regional, state, or international)
Other Duties as Assigned – 5%

- Demonstrated knowledge and competence to develop, plan and implement a curriculum for early childhood education is required. Must be knowledgeable in pertinent state and federal regulations relating to the daily operations of an early childhood education center including licensing regulations, education regulations, child abuse reporting requirements, and public health and sanitation codes and requirements.
As related to the major responsibilities for this position:
- Operating the Afternoon Preschool Program as a head teacher

- Demonstrating knowledge and competence in child development and early childhood education (curriculum, guidance, state and federal regulations, special education referral regulations, child abuse reporting requirements, and public health, etc.)
- Demonstrating experience working effectively with and ability communicating with a diverse population (e.g., varied racial/ethnic, linguistic, socioeconomic, religious groups)
- Demonstrating commitment for fostering a working (or learning) environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrating sensitivity to cross-cultural perspectives and experiences
- Demonstrating computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications, including word-processing, spreadsheets, licensing software, observation systems, Internet as well as email
- Capability for lifting and carrying children, frequent sitting, squatting, standing, and physical classroom activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher level of education in child development or early childhood education preferred.
- Consistent with the state Child Development Permit Matrix, those without a degree must have completed at least 24 semester units in child development or early childhood education and the additional general education requirements.
- California Teaching Credential (CTC) Child Development Teacher Permit; Must meet requirements for CTC permit at the Site Supervisor level
- Completed the required units of supervised field experience; those without a degree must have one to two years of experience, including one year of experience providing teacher/staff supervision.
- Current Pediatric First Aid/CPR
- Driver’s license
- Upon employment, must provide proof of TB clearance, health screening, immunization records, and background checks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework and experience working with developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum (e.g., constructivist, emergent curriculum, project based/Reggio Emilia or High scope)
- Coursework and commitment to support children with various needs and their families (e.g., making referrals, connecting with local resources, attending IEP meetings, etc.)
- Experience working with college students.
- Knowledge of authentic assessment and portfolio keeping parent-staff relations, public relations, and curriculum
- Demonstrated effective writing and verbal communication skills including ability to participate in group discussions and solve problems.
- Ability to plan, organize, and follow a schedule of activities.
