PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Senior Director of Health and Wellness Services and day to day work direction of the Health Promotion and Prevention Manager, the Health Educator is responsible for selected components of the Health Promotion and Education Program, supporting the overall program by researching, developing, and maintaining health promotion materials, as well as planning, conducting, and evaluating health-related programs, events, workshops, and trainings.  With a specialty in suicide prevention, the Suicide Prevention Coordinator plans, develops, implements, manages, and assesses the suicide prevention program to meet the mental and related health needs of students at California State University, Monterey Bay. This role advances the collaborative efforts between Health and Wellness Services and campus and community partners. Working within the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, this position promotes health and suicide prevention awareness and works collaboratively with the Dean of Students office, Personal Growth and Counseling Center, Campus Health Center, Student Disability and Accessibility Center, Campus Advocate, Campus Chaplaincy, and other campus stakeholders. All work performed is consistent with appropriate professional standards established by organizations such as the American Federation for Suicide Prevention and the American Association of Suicidology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following

  1. Leads, plans, implements, and promotes health education programming related to suicide prevention, including: educational seminars for students, staff, and faculty; staff and faculty gatekeeper training; and the preparation and dissemination of educational materials for students’ families and supporters. Supports the planning and execution of suicide postvention efforts to support students, faculty, staff, and families in the event of a suicide within the campus community. Contributes to content creation for Health and Wellness Services’ social media accounts.
  2. Delivers health promotion programs, events, workshops, and trainings to the campus community.  Provides consultation with students in health-related areas such as alcohol and other drug education, nutrition, reproductive health, smoking cessation, physical activity, mental health, and suicide prevention. Includes infectious diseases educational sessions for the campus community (i.e., science of origins, testing, contact tracing, vaccine development, and safety information).
  3. Collaborates with stakeholders across campus and within the local community for the purpose of addressing broad programmatic issues, identifying student health and related mental health needs, and enhancing service delivery. Serves on campus teams and/or committees as appropriate or necessary. Maintains close working relationships with other departments and programs within Health and Wellness Services to address broad programmatic issues and fosters a team approach to specific issues.
  4. Collects participant data to assess goal, objective, and outcome achievement; makes recommendations to leadership for program improvements; monitors trends; and addresses behavioral health disparities, if any.
  5. Contributes to the oversight and supervision of students voluntarily participating in the POWER Peer Education program.

Other Functions:

  1. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of: health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education.  General knowledge of (or ability to learn quickly) current and emerging college age student health issues and existing methods of intervention and control.  Working knowledge of: the principles of educational and social psychology and how they apply to a health education program; and applicable industry standards and practices for health promotion, such as those found in the American College Health Association’s “Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education”.

Ability to: assess needs and establish or recommend program priorities and goals, and develop plans to achieve goals; collect, compile, chart, and analyze data pertinent to health education program planning; plan, organize, conduct or oversee a variety of health education programs and activities, including discussion groups, workshops, and electronic educational tools; develop educational resources such as pamphlets, audio/visual materials, and electronic media; present ideas and information accurately, effectively, and concisely, both orally and in writing; use computer and web-based information technology systems as resources for research and providing health education programs; maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable laws and regulations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, students, medical and other health professionals, representatives of the news media, and other community groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an approved program in health education or a related field.  Equivalent to one or two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

Thorough knowledge of suicide prevention theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of suicide prevention curricula and mental health promotion programs; and industry standards for the delivery of suicide prevention programs in higher education. General knowledge of (or ability to learn quickly) current and emerging college-age student mental and general health issues, and existing methods of suicide prevention and postvention. Working knowledge of applicable industry standards and practices for suicide prevention, such as those established by the American Federation for Suicide Prevention and the American Association of Suicidology. Knowledge of budget management and tracking.

Proficient in the use of personal computers, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.  Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position, including the knowledge and abilities identified above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in public health, social work, psychology, or a related field and/or national certification.  Working knowledge of community resources within the Monterey/Santa Cruz/San Benito tri-county area and previous university experience.  Technical fluency with Banner, Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
