We are currently seeking experienced candidates for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor, Strategic Engagement. The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. The CSU Chancellor's Office offers a premium benefit package that includes outstanding vacation, health, and dental plans; a fee waiver education program; membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS); and 15 paid holidays a year.
Salary
The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $18,678 per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The salary range for this classification is $10,106 to $32,441 per month.

Position Information
The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Assistant Vice Chancellor, Strategic Engagement to provide strategic leadership for external relations and engagement with a focus on enhancing and expanding existing partnerships and developing new partnerships with national and statewide policy organizations, non-profits of influence, corporate organizations, organizations associated with the caucuses, third-party advocates and private sector partners. Of critical importance is the role that the AVC serves as an engaged partner within the Chancellor’s Office to enhance coordination and partnerships with the CSU campuses. The incumbent will work in coordination with the AVCs for Advocacy & State Relations and Federal Relations to provide support, coordination and guidance for partnership efforts with the senior leadership teams of the campuses, helping to ensure that their efforts are effective locally and regionally, as well as in support of the CSU State and Federal agendas. This position will engage new, critical industry partners who can advance the Chancellor’s vision to ensure that students are adequately prepared to meet the economic and workforce needs. Their efforts are focused on developing mutually beneficial partnerships that meet higher education and industry needs.
This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office (in-person)) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.
Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor, External Relations and Communications, the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Strategic Engagement will perform duties as outlined below:
-Develops, implements, and advises on strategic internal and external stakeholder cultivation, engagement, and advocacy to the Vice Chancellor of External Relations and Communications, the leadership of the Division of ERC, and the executive leadership team in the Office of the Chancellor.
-Develops and implements initiatives that engage external stakeholders so they can continuously enhance and improve the mission and goals of the California State University system.
-Grows, cultivates, and stewards effective relationships and partnerships with external organizations, elected officials, alumni, business, industry, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations, and members of the community to enhance the visibility and prominence of the California State University system and to ultimately advance the system’s strategic interest and reputation on a local, statewide, national and international level.
-Works closely with the Vice Chancellor of External Relations & Communications, systemwide and campus leaders by facilitating effective partnerships among academic divisions, student success programs/initiatives, and administrative units with industry leaders, community leaders, and government and non-governmental organizations through innovative programming, engaged learning opportunities, career pathways, and strategic partnerships.
-Devises, manages, oversees, and pursues engagement strategies that lead to effective and long-term partnerships that support the mission of the California State University system and augment the system's reach into targeted communities in support of targeted initiatives.
-Develops transparent and collaborative partnerships with other teams within the Office of the Chancellor and the Division of External Relations & Communications; cross-functional collaboration including but not limited to advocacy and state relations, systemwide advancement/foundation, and strategic communications and marketing.
-Provides support, direction and guidance for campus local, and regional advocacy and partnership efforts including identification of non-profit and third-party advocates, community leaders, and industry partners.
-Supervises the Director of Strategic Engagement.
Qualifications
This position requires:
-Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred.
-A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in external or community relations is required, with at least 3 years of management experience.
-Experience in higher education is preferred.
-High emotional intelligence with the ability to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically; preferred demonstrated experience advancing and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
-An innovative and inspiring leader with a highly accessible and approachable management style that values collegiality and collaboration in the development of new ideas.
-Exceptional presentation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to address with sensitivity different audiences within and outside of the CSU.
-High-level, comprehensive strategic planning skills; preferably experience developing, articulating, and implementing a strategic vision within a complex institutional environment.
-A forward-thinking, collaborative, and strategic minded executive poised to streamline processes, reduce redundancy, and increase cross-unit collaboration with a focus on continuous improvement.
