THE DEPARTMENT:
Student Health Services, is one component of the Student Health and Wellbeing Cluster within the Division of Student Affairs. This cluster stresses the University's commitment to preventative and holistic approaches to wellbeing in support of students and the institution's mission and strategic plan. In addition to Student Health Services, this cluster includes Care Services, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and the Disability Resource Center. The mission of Student Health Services is to promote students' healthy lifestyles and academic success by providing quality medical, psychological and wellness services. The department provides ambulatory health care, health education programs, prevention and healing services to students of Cal Poly Pomona
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Act as the point person to carry out Immunization requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 803 by working under the direction of and in collaboration with the Lead Nurse, Lead Physician and Director on activities including, but not limited to, the following: Review incoming student immunization records to ensure compliance with EO 803.
- Administer vaccines, perform TB tests, order labs and follow-up lab results related to immunization compliance.
- Run queries to identify non-compliant students and place registration holds as indicated.
- Initiate, monitor and track follow up communication with students regarding immunization compliance and Tuberculosis testing timelines.
- Counsel and educate patients on matter related to immunization compliance.
- Schedule appointments for immunizations, titers and TB testing.
- Monitor and maintain adequate inventory of vaccines.
- Perform monthly documentation of vaccine Inventory Reconciliation.
- Maintain calibration of temperature monitoring equipment.
- Identify temperature excursions on vaccine refrigerator quickly and take immediate action to correct them.
- Coordinate with programs and departments on campus involved in immunization requirements.
- Collaborate in planning, coordination and preparation of immunization clinics.
- Assist in the development and implementation of immunization related nursing policies and protocols.
- Provide updates to staff on Best Practice Immunization guidelines and recommendations Primary oversight for Medical Assistants and LVN’s during immunization clinics and review of submitted immunization records for compliance with EO 803.
- In collaboration with charge nurse, adjust Daily Schedule nursing assignments to meet high demand times for Immunization Clearance.
- Provides student-centered and culturally competent patient care in accordance with Student Health Services procedures.
- Provides nursing assessment, observation and intervention in any patient care areas of Student Health Services.
- Interview patient to collect data regarding the nature of the patient’s condition, including symptoms and signs of illness and/or injury.
- Assist in patient flow and rooming. Prepare patients for examination by a licensed health care provider and assist in the examination when appropriate.
- Take vital signs including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, height and weight, and make appropriate entries in electronic medical health records.
- Contribute to the evaluation of individualized interventions related to the care or treatment plan and perform follow-up treatments as requested.
- Under the orders of a physician or similar licensed practitioner and according to established standardized procedures, may administer medications by various means, including intramuscular and subcutaneous routes.
- Incumbents may start and superimpose intravenous lines and fluids, and administer vaccines provided a prescribed course approved by the Board of Licensed Vocational Nursing and competencies have been verified.
- Perform TB and other skins tests; Administer allergy injections, medications, immunizations and IV therapy, perform electrocardiograms and pulmonary function testing; conduct irrigations; observe and record drug reactions; apply and change dressings; measuring and fitting for crutches and teaching patients to walk with crutches; ear lavage; and similar treatments and procedures.
- Support general health center maintenance activities such as cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing equipment, exam rooms and instruments, setting up treatment trays, stocking supplies.
- May be involved in the development and implementation of nursing and patient care services, policies and procedures.
- May assist other medical or technical personnel in other clinical departments such as the laboratory, or radiology and perform specialized nursing duties as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Combination - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a state approved vocational nursing program in an accredited school of vocational nursing or equivalent training and experience as defined by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).
- LVN - Licensed Vocational Nurse Possess and maintain a valid Vocational Nurse license issued by the State of California. Possess and maintain certification for intravenous therapy as defined by the BVNPT Required
- Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED
- May also be required to possess and maintain a valid CPR/AED certification and/or IV certification as appropriate to the assigned duties.
- Equivalent to three to four years of progressive responsibility as a LVN, including some experience in the specialty area to successfully perform work in the specialty; possess and maintain specialized training and/or related certifications.
- In addition to those of the LVN I, possess broader and specialized knowledge and skills which support running and staffing specialty clinics, providing case management services and providing patient counseling in the specialty area; broader knowledge of clinic operations and the development and implementation of clinic and nursing policies and procedures; and basic principles of lead work direction. (LVN I: Thorough knowledge of nursing care principles and practices pertaining to the scope of practice; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; basic medications and their effects, as well as potential complications; application and proper use of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing assigned nursing duties; and aseptic techniques and requirements. Working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to LVNs and their scope of practice). In addition to those of the LVN I, the ability to effectively apply specialized skills, possess strong organizational skills and, if assigned, provide effective lead work direction to specified health center support staff. (LVN I: Ability to perform assigned nursing duties and demonstrate appropriate nursing practices; demonstrate proper techniques and skills, competency in performing assigned nursing duties and patient care activities described above; learn related clinic procedures and handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center; understand basic medical terminology; make accurate observations and accurately document a patient’s subjective complaint in medical records; exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility; follow detailed oral and written instructions; and use applicable health center automated systems as needed to perform duties.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Phlebotomy certificate.
- Prefer experience using Excel or EMR capability to track patient outcomes.
- Desire strong organizational skills, ability to initiate process improvement and meet deadlines.
- Ability to perform assigned nursing duties and demonstrate appropriate nursing practices; demonstrate proper techniques and skills, competency in performing assigned nursing duties and patient care activities described above; learn related clinic procedures and handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center; understand basic medical terminology; make accurate observations and accurately document a patient’s subjective complaint in medical records; exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility; follow detailed oral and written instructions; and use applicable health center automated systems as needed to perform duties.
- Knowledge of Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for Pediatric and Adult immunizations.
- Knowledge of CDC vaccine storage and handling guidelines. Thorough knowledge of nursing care principles and practices pertaining to the scope of practice; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; basic medications and their effects, as well as potential complications; application and proper use of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing assigned nursing duties; and aseptic techniques and requirements.
- Working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to LVNs and their scope of practice.
- Ability to work calmly in a stressful situation. Ability to communicate with a variety of people (students, health care providers, faculty, staff, administrators, community members) in an effective, clear, sensitive and timely manner.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment, and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in meeting student healthcare and operational needs.

CSU Classification Salary Range
This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 2. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $3,993 and maximum $7,705 per month. University Driving Requirement
Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy.
