
Salary and Benefits
PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $156,000 per year to $162,000 per year.
This position is a Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position in the CSU, and serves at the pleasure of the President.
The CSU enjoys a generous benefits program with employer paid life insurance ($100,000), as well as health, dental, and vision insurance with the monthly premium largely paid by the CSU. About the Position
The Division of University Advancement builds a compelling case for choice and support of CSUEB among all of its constituents by communicating and advocating for the University’s distinctive regional position, role and contributions, thus forging relationships and securing commitments required to advance the institution’s mission and priorities. Its programs are designed to increase the level of private giving to the university, strengthen existing ties with local and regional constituents, and develop new opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships with individuals and organizations. The University’s development structure is centralized and includes dedicated, accomplished personnel, working together in a cohesive, collegial, and fast-paced environment. UA departments are organized along the following functional lines: University Communications & Marketing, Annual Giving & Alumni Engagement, Development, Analytics & Advancement Services, University Events and Operations.
The Sr. Director of Major Gifts is responsible for the realization of the University’s significant private support potential through the successful implementation of the major gifts fundraising and corporate and foundation relations and other fundraising activities as assigned. As a key member of the University Advancement leadership team, the Sr. Director will report directly to the Vice President, University Advancement and will work with the President, the Provost and Deans, the Cal State East Bay Educational Foundation Board of Trustees, other volunteers and development staff to identify, cultivate and solicit individual major and principal gift donors and corporate and foundation donor gifts in support of initiatives and priorities. Working in conjunction with the Vice President, the Sr. Director will be responsible for establishing metrics for success, managing a portfolio of prospects and donors capable of making major gifts to the institution, and creating a cohesive, collaborative and strategic major gifts fundraising team.
The Sr. Director will have management and supervision responsibilities for development staff within University Advancement. This is a position in the CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President.
The Sr. Director also carries the title of Campaign Sr. Director, and in that capacity is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the University’s major gifts program and will strengthen and advance campaign strategies. The Sr. Director, in conjunction with University leadership, will develop and manage the campaign strategic plan; strengthen volunteer structures and staff roles in campaign strategies and policies, and provide supervisory functions for all major gift officers.
Responsibilities
Management of University Fundraising
- In conjunction with the VPUA, set annual major and planned gifts fundraising goals.
- Oversee the preparation of written proposals, informational materials, planned gift illustrations, gift agreements and other materials to secure major and principal gifts, including proposals to corporations and foundations.
- Ensure compliance with fundraising policies, goals and procedures.
- Coordinate communications (case statements, recognition, stewardship, information) of fundraising initiatives and results.
- In conjunction with the Vice President, review and modify or approve the fundraising plans of major and planned gifts fundraising initiatives.
- Support college deans to maximize their effectiveness in fundraising for approved initiatives.
- Achieve annual fiscal year major and planned gifts fundraising goals.
Fundraising
- Provide management, cultivation, and solicitation for a personal portfolio of top prospects and donors as assigned.
- Provide strategic assistance to the President, Vice President, Provost, Deans and other University leadership including school and unit leaders in relation to fundraising and other university wide projects.
- Meet annual performance metrics.
Unit Management
- Supervise Development Officers with assigned responsibility for major gifts, planned gifts and corporation and foundation relationships.
- Motivate and lead Development Officers to ensure annual performance metrics are met.
- Analyze and interpret performance of staff.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum five years of experience in development and three years of management/supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated successful experience working with boards and foundations comprising prominent individuals.
- Experience in budget management.
- Experience managing fundraising staff and demonstrated success working with faculty, deans, administrative leaders and volunteers.
- Experience with campaign design, implementation, reporting cycles, communications and completion.
Education
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution-preference given to a master’s degree or greater.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- A thorough understanding of fundraising programs, including major gifts, corporate and foundation gifts planned and deferred gifts.
- Demonstrated significant growth in fundraising revenue in roles with progressive responsibility.
- Demonstrated personal, successful major donor cultivation and solicitation.
- Knowledge of deferred giving techniques and IRS rules and regulations.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and writing skills, including the ability to determine relevant information and form compelling cases for support.
- Strong analytical and reporting skills with an ethic of accountability.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse student, staff, faculty and campus community as well as strong public relations skills.
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, the use of information technology to support advancement programs together with a working knowledge of donor database system(s) as an end user.
- Complete knowledge of metrics-driven major gift fundraising programs.
