About the Position:
Welcome to the Undeclared and Academic Advising Center (UAAC). We support all undergraduate students at Cal State Fullerton, (CSUF) and our goal is to empower students to seek support and take the lead throughout their academic journey. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our Academic Advising leadership team as the Director of Academic Advising, Specialized Advising Programs (Administrator II). Leading specialized advising programs and campus-wide advising initiatives focused on delivering equitable, top-notch advising for all new and continuing students. Our Academic Advising mission is to work in a collaborative partnership with students, a shared responsibility, where the advisor and student are equally invested in the educational process and holistic development of the student. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Academic Advising, the Director of Academic Advising, Specialized Advising Programs will be part of a team of Directors and Associate Directors as leaders and mentors of academic advising teams on campus. The team of directors and associate directors, working collectively, implement the vision, goals, and objectives of Academic Advising at CSUF. In conjunction with university and college leadership, the Director of Academic Advising, Specialized Advising Programs, will ensure all students will be successful in navigating their academic journey, starting at matriculation through graduation. The Cal State Fullerton academic advising enterprise is a critical unit in the university's objective to eliminate inequities in student success outcomes. Further, the Director of Academic Advising, Specialized Advising Programs will partner with colleagues to influence the strategic implementation of student success initiatives and strategies of the university.
The Director of Academic Advising, Specialized Advising Programs oversees campus-wide advising programs and the staff in those programs, such as the Health Professions Advising Office, Black Student Success Advising Program, and University Honors Advising Program, etc. Oversees several Chancellor Office CSU system programs at CSUF and the staff in those programs, such as the Second Start program, Early Assessment Program, Finish in Two Through in Two (formerly California Promise) Program, and the Supportive Pathway for First Year (Early Start) program, etc. The Director will lead and strategize the re-engagement programs and initiatives focusing on CSUF students who have left the universities, such as Bring Back Titans, Second Start Program and the Finish Strong Re-Enrollment Degree Completion initiatives.
The Director of Academic Advising, Specialized Advising Program will collaborate with College Advising Directors, Associate Deans, college Advising Team members, faculty academic advisors, academic departments, and other advising/counseling professionals to identify and implement strategic interventions and programs so that all students will achieve their goals to succeed academically and personally. In supervising professional academic advising staff members in the specialized advising programs and initiatives, the Director of Academic Advising, Specialized Advising Programs is responsible for the development of the professional advising staff. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications
|
Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in higher education leadership, college student development or a related field. A minimum of five years of increasing coordinator and/or managerial responsibilities, in a higher education environment. Strong understanding and experience in contributing to complex, dynamic academic advising and/or student success programs in Minority Serving Institutions (e.g., Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs)), and/or in programs to advance the academic success of first-gen students and underrepresented students. Demonstrate exemplary professionalism (to include appropriate confidentiality), commitment to equity and inclusion, lifelong learning, and self-professional development. Excellent written and verbal communication, ability to communicate to a variety of audiences using multiple channels of communication, develop and deliver presentations. Ability to lead and manage multiple projects and prioritize short- and long-term goals and responsibilities with frequent interruptions.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications
|
Doctorate in a related field from an accredited institution. Knowledge of advising multiple majors, colleges, and schools, with familiarity in professional and global industry advising standards and best practices. Proven skill in evaluating academic records, along with knowledge of academic program administration and career counseling principles. Experience with data analytics and technology tools as they relate to planning, data-driven program development, and assessment—such as Navigate360 (EAB), Tableau, Canvas, and PeopleSoft. Skilled in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments. Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates a spirit of teamwork and adaptability to change, fostering a cooperative environment. Ability to select, supervise, and train both represented and non-represented staff, including organizing, prioritizing, scheduling work assignments, and assessing performance. Knowledge of educational theory and principles, and experience in the practical application of advising techniques. Familiarity with research-based evidence and frameworks regarding the trajectories and experiences of underrepresented students in higher education.
